Business Developer & Economic Builder - Workforce Development
The Opportunity:
Our vision for a vibrant and prosperous city-region is significantly influenced by the quality and quantity of our labour resources. Within the region we have existing local strengths (human and institutional), as well as planned new projects that will drive growth into the future. However, shifting demographics, immigration patterns and technologies have heightened the need for creative and purposeful new approaches for workforce planning and development. We need to ensure our community has access to the workforce it requires to effectively move forward. The opportunity, and the challenge, is to attract, retain and engage a workforce that supports our growth and competitive advantages.
The Role:
The role fits within the Economic Development division of EEDC. Working collaboratively and strategically with industry and government, this position is responsible for creating a proactive approach to workforce planning and development. Balancing leadership and action, this role involves:
- Supporting an effective local workforce through skills attraction, retention and development
- Understanding current and projected workforce requirements, and anticipating shifts in supply and demand
- Leading and facilitating cross-industry meetings and initiatives for collective gain
- Developing strategies to address workforce requirements, and driving the execution of supporting programs and initiatives
- Ensuring workforce strategies support value-added economic opportunities
- Working as a catalyst for idea generation, innovation and action - the role is about creating as well as executing
- Emphasizing labour productivity through education and use of technology
- Interfacing with industry and educational institutions to support targeted skill development
- Contributing to provincial initiatives to strengthen our workforce
- Ongoing activities to identify issues and opportunities, and ensure appropriate actions are taken
The Candidate:
We are looking for a smart person who is passionate about our community, and who wants to do something meaningful to help it move forward. The ideal candidate is/has:
- A big picture thinker with an eye to the long-term
- An aptitude for building strategy, and the drive to facilitate execution
- A person of integrity, with great capacity for inspiring, influencing, leading and doing
- Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills - this is a relationship-based, bridge-building role
- Experience in workforce or labour markets, and/or combination of education/experience
- A change positive inclination and an understanding of what is possible - our work is proactive and creative
Economic Development is a process of creating, building and sustaining wealth for a community, its residents, and its businesses. We work to improve the standard of living and quality of life in the region. While the initial focus for this position will be in the area of workforce development, it will broaden to include support for other elements of EEDC's economic development strategy.
Internally, we operate in a team environment; externally, relationships and partnerships are pivotally important. Our work is always interesting, never prescriptive, and often transformational.
